A majdani expedícióban igen fontos szerepet játszhatnak, a már említett Földről származó víz részecskék az küldetés létfenntartó rendszereinek működtetésében.
A fenti képeken is láthatóak a Hold északi és déli pólusainál található jég formájában felelhető víz mennyiség. A felvételeket még 2009-ben készítette a Nasa "Moon Mineralogy Mapper" műszere. A kép ball oldalán a Hold déli sarka látható jobbra pedig az északi. Az ott található jég mennyiségét világos kék szín jelöli.
Mindezzel együtt a Holdon lévő víz mennyiségének túlnyomó része korábban becsapódott kisbolygókból és üstökösökből származik.
A kutatások elsődleges fókuszában a déli póluson található nagyobb kráterek gravitációs mérései állnak, melyek eredményei arra utalnak hogy a kráterek alatt jelentős mennyiségű folyékony víz található. Ezt a vizet tudná hasznosítani a majdani Artemis küldetés.
